One of Chicagoans’ favorite things to do in the summer is to attend the Taste of Chicago. This year, after trying to privatize the world’s largest outdoor food festival, Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daily has decided to turn over control of this major Mid-western event to the City’s Park District. Chicago Park District General Superintendent Timothy Mitchell said through a press release “Mayor Daley has stressed the importance of keeping the Taste of Chicago free with no admission fee, especially during these tough economic times. Our goal is to do just that while also ensuring that the Taste remains economically viable.”

The 31st Annual Taste of Chicago will inherit four of Chicago’s other festivals in order to cut costs: the Country Music Festival, Celtic Fest, the Gospel Festival and Viva Chicago. But, rest assure, The Blues Fest and the Jazz Fest will not be affected by this change.

890am WLS reported, "Four of the big summer music festivals are being downgraded to single day events and put into Taste of Chicago. They are the country and gospel music festivals, Viva Chicago Latin Music Festival and Celtic Fest Chicago. And no expensive big name talents in any of them. Only the Chicago Blues and Jazz festivals will continue as stand alone events over several days."

History

Arnald Morton founder of Morton's of Chicago (now, Called: Morton's The Steakhouse) convinced Mayor Jane Burn and Louis Weisburg to Block the Magnificent Mile (Michigan Avenue) for the first Taste of Chicago. Organizers of this one day event expected roughly 100,000 people. This expectation was surpassed 2½ times with an estimated 250,000 visitors.

In 1983, Chicago Mayor Herold Washington phased out the fizzling ChicagoFest, placing the Taste of Chicago as the city's premiere summer festival.
